Description

nuun is a portable electrolyte replacement drink... without the sugar. just drop a nuun in your water bottle, store the tube in your pocket & you’re ready to go.  it’s used by cyclists, triathletes, runners, hikers, yoga-bods, travellers around the world…in fact, it’s used by people who ‘do stuff’ & know the importance of staying properly hydrated.

Editorial Review

By Michael Donikian, USAT Certified Coach, NASM-CPT

nuun has become one of my favorite electrolyte replacement drinks ever since I discovered it about a year ago.  At the simplest level, it's a sports drink without all the sugar (just the electrolytes).  The electrolytes will help maintain even hydration levels, avoid muscle cramps (especially those pesky calf muscle cramps while running), and absorb fluids more quickly (avoiding that sloshy stomach feeling).  Just dissolve one or two tablets in a bottle of water and you're ready to go.

Convenience
Incredibly convenient.  Just carry a tube around with you while going on a long workout and dissolve tablets as needed in your water bottles.

Taste
It tastes pretty good depending on the flavor--my favorite is the lemon+lime flavor.  The citrus fruit and tri berry are OK, the orange ginger bothers my stomach and the kona cola is a love-it-or-hate-it type flavor... I personally don't like it but Ton thinks it's "the bomb."  The first few workouts were a little tough on my GI system (probably due to the sorbitol) but then I got used to it like any new sports nutrition.  I normally can't stand anything with an artificial sweetener but I can barely taste it (acesulfame potassium) in nuun.  Note: nuun BIGGER only comes in two flavors - though luckily lemon+lime is one of them!

Low sugar & high electrolyte content
If you're looking to cut sugar from your diet, but still take a sports drink during your workouts, then nuun is a great choice for you.  For those practicing nutrition periodization, nuun is also a great choice for base training and off-season training.  nuun also has a good amount of sodium (360mg) and potassium (100mg) per 16 oz serving.

Serving Size
The serving sizes they chose for nuun seem a little odd (16oz for a standard nuun tablet and 32 oz for a nuun BIGGER) since most water bottle are about 24 oz.  Each nuun tablet can easily be split in half so if you want a 24 oz nuun drink, you can use a tablet and a half.  While nuun does have a very good amount of electrolyte content per tablet, it is actually a little low if you're not combining it with gels.  For that reason, you may want to use two tablets per 24 oz bottle but beware that it may make the drink a little too sweet.  Other alternatives are to combine nuun with another electrolyte product like Hammer Endurolyte powder or an electrolyte tablet like SaltStick or Suceeed.

Conclusion
Definitely a winner:  Convenient / easy to carry and plenty of electrolytes without the sugar.  Helps you avoid muscle cramps and keeps you well hydrated. It does have some minor drawbacks (ingredients: sorbitol and acesulfame potassium) and serving size (no 24 oz option).

Drop one tablet into 500mL of water, and enjoy.
